Situated on the picturesque south shore of Carlingford Lough, the captivating town of Carlingford. Nestled in the northeastern corner of County Louth, just a 25-minute drive from Newry, Carlingford is perfectly positioned to unveil the wonders of the underrated gem that is the Cooley Peninsula. Within this remarkable region, ancient ringforts, neolithic tombs, castles, enchanting villages, and medieval structures await discovery, while a multitude of invigorating hikes such as Ravensdale Forest, Slieve Foye, and the scenic lough-side Greenway beckon adventurers.

Steeped in history, the charming town of Carlingford boasts not only a striking castle but also the historic Tholsel, creating a rich tapestry of cultural heritage.  From the lively pubs bustling with activity on weekends to the array of exceptional dining establishments serving delectable oysters and locally sourced seafood, Carlingford offers a vibrant social scene.

Its quaint medieval streets, adorned with ancient relics like Taaffe's Castle, now an atmospheric pub, bear witness to its past as a strategic port that flourished during the 14th century, despite enduring subsequent raids and a siege.

Among the town's oldest landmarks stands Carlingford Castle, an architectural marvel constructed in the 12th century by Hugh de Lacy, later renamed King John's Castle when the monarch assumed control. A surviving testament to the town's defensive prowess, Tholsel Street proudly showcases the remaining town gate, complete with sinister murder holes.   This gateway tower not only controlled access to the town but also collected taxes on incoming goods and even served as the local jail.

Brimming with captivating bars, enticing restaurants, and a plethora of outdoor activities, Carlingford stands as a vibrant and thriving tourist destination, offering a delightful blend of history, natural beauty, and warm hospitality.
